Operation Boat Rescue at Porthleven

Following the devastating high tide which smashed the baulks breaching the inner harbour defences, six to eight boats were sunk and a huge operation commenced to remove as many boats as possible before the next high tide. Also there was damage evident all over the harbour area.

Not sure how this boat ended up blocking the road

The baulks that protect the inner harbour, completely gone

Tractor and manpower needed to recover the boats

The old lifeboat station, now an art gallery suffered significant damage

One of the large harbour wall stones, dislodged by the huge waves

Harbour wall stones strewn across the road

One of the local cafes and adjacent properties boarded up

Heavy equipment to drag boats up the slipway out of the harbour

Manpower also pushing boats up the slipway

These are two of the large baulks that used to block the inner harbour!

Storm Smashes into Porthleven

Hi, these images are from the storm on the 5/2/2014.  Porthleven took a big hit from this one.  Lots of boats sunk as the inner harbour defences were breached and much damage to the harbour area also. My next post will cover the damage, in this one images are from the peak at high tide.

Calm after the storm

Flat calm seas returned to Newlyn/Mounts Bay and even the sun made an appearance for a while.  In today's pictures, the Ivan Ellen (Severn Class Lifeboat) returning from exercise, some gig boats enjoying the flat conditions and a Great Northern Diver off Sandy Cove.

Even though the storm has subsided the high tide was sufficient to flood Penzance and other areas again today (Monday am)

Another Day, Another Storm! 150ft+ waves

Well this time storm "Brigid" rolled into our shores, this created a lot of damage in North Cornwall. As usual though I covered Lands End and Porthleven.  People ask why visit the same area, well it's all about research/learning conditions light direction etc and going out until I get the picture I want.  For my first shots of Longships Lighthouse at Lands End close to what I want but lighting wasn't right.  Need a massive early morning swell which would work well for what I want as the light (hopefully good) will be in the right direction. Swell direction wave height etc all come into it but the light is the most important aspect. So after photographing the lighthouse I headed to Porthleven, ok high tide was after dark around 6pm, but any remaining light would be in a good direction (it was but not good quality).

Porthleven defences being tested

Last of the light about an hour before high tide

The two people in front off the clock tower had already had a near miss, they were stud next to the light post for the previous wave which smothered them (idiots)

Scotland's Iconic White Tailed Sea Eagles Under Threat

After a successful re-introduction of the iconic  White Tailed Sea Eagle someone has created a scarmongering/inacurate article lacking any evidence or factual information to back his joke of an article.  Please follow the link below and vote on the article:

In short a small minority reckon they have a case to exterminate the White Tailed Sea Eagle from Scotland, it really is a pathetic bit of reporting:

No posts/photography for a while

Well I recently had shoulder surgery at St Michael's hospital in Hayle, hence I will need to have a recovery period of between 6 weeks to 4 months. That said surgery went well the hospital, surgeon and staff were all superb.  The sling can come off tomorrow and then I start the physio on Tuesday, with stitches out the following Tuesday so recovery going as expected; and I can already lift a TV remote with my duff arm lol.

No pictures now for over a week, and that could be a long time before the next ones, so keep following the blog and I will pop back when I can!

Hope you have all had a good start to 2014 and good luck with your picture taking, I look forward to seeing all your images over the next few weeks

Meanwhile here is a Red Squirrel from about 4 years ago!
